Beyond Success and Failure
The Art Activisms cluster held an evening of public discussion Beyond Success and Failure: Reflecting on Socially engaged art practice on social practice with artists Becky Shaw, Liz Wewiora and Regan McDonald as we question where we place the value and success of socially engaged work.
Becky Shaw is an artist, researcher and Professor in Fine Art Practice at BCU. She makes live, collaborative artworks that explore the tension between individuals, environment and social structures. Liz Wewiora is an artist, curator-producer and educator. She is currently the Head of Social Practice at Open Eye Gallery (Liverpool) and the Programme leader for MA Art and Design at the University of Salford. Regan McDonald is a researcher and producer (Public Health Research Officer) leading on Ikon Gallery’s Creative Health programme in collaboration with Birmingham City Council Public Health. Becky, Liz and Regan each gave an introduction to their work, sharing insights into their artistic and curaotiral practice and its challenges. This was followed by a panel discussion led by Jaskirt Boora, which was open, honest and though-provoking.
Open to the public, the Art Activisms event was held in the historic School of Art building on Margaret Street in Birmingham on 21 May 2025.
